School’s Out for Summer:  6 things to do in Swansea Market

  1. Discover a new hobby!
We know, it’s hard sometimes to keep kids away from the screen, but a great way to keep them busy and keep their minds active this summer is to learn a new hobby! For those into more outdoor pursuits, you could visit Angler’s Mate and try your hand at fishing or get to grips with gardening at Plant More Plants! More artistic types could try Dutton Yarns or Bollywood Theme and Fabric for inspiration for creative projects that you can try at home!
  2. Check out our fantastic events!
The Vegan Market will arrive on Saturday 4th August for one day only, selling delicious Vegan foods, cosmetics and more! And, our monthly Farmer’s Market is coming up on the 10th & 11th of August, bringing an exciting and varied range of local traders to the Market.
  3. Let their taste-buds travel the world!
There’s no need to spend a fortune to take the kids globe-hopping this summer, just let our fantastic eateries transport your taste-buds to faraway climes. The culinary tour includes sumptuous Japanese cuisine at Little Tokyo, healthy and homemade Middle Eastern delights at The Falafel Stall, decadent USA style hoagies at The Market Pantry, the fragrant flavours of Thailand at Thai Taste and tastes of the world from Deli Cymreig! After all that travelling this summer, you may want something more traditional like a Sunday dinner from The Lunchbox or a Full English from Country Kitchen. There’s so many delicious destinations!
  4. Explore!
There’s over 80 stalls in the Market! So, have a wander, you never know what you’ll discover!
  5. Get them prepped for the new term
Swansea Market’s got everything they need to start the term in style! Get a fresh trim from Taffy’s or some trendy hair slides and scrunchies from The Powder Room, a new school bag from Lethbridge Handbags and some stationery from N.B Books!
  6. Treat yourself
It’s been a busy summer keeping the kids occupied, so why not treat yourself? You could cook up a delicious dinner with steak from Vaughan’s or catch of the day from The Market Plaice, indulge with a beauty treatment from Rani’s Brow and Eyelash Lounge, a new piece of jewellery or a watch from Don’s Jewellery, or simply just relax with a cuppa and a cake at the Donut Den.

The Farmer’s Market will include all manner of locally produced products such as baked goods, sweet treats, homemade conserves and chutneys, meats and charcuterie, artisan made cheeses, unique and original vegetarian and vegan products, locally brewed alcohol, skin care, arts, photography and more. Plus you’ll still be able to shop at all your favourite stalls!

Women’s History Month & International Women’s Day

March is Women’s History Month, and with 2018 being the 100th anniversary of the Suffragettes we’re putting the spotlight on our women traders at the market.

“I come from a long line of strong business women whose motto was never to settle for anything. My great grandmother was the proprietor of D.E Powell, a butcher shop in this same market! Now, 3 generations on, I’m continuing the tradition with my own stall, but in a very different field!” – Charlotte, Brontosaurus

“To make a business work, you have to choose something you’re passionate about” – Rekha Rani, Rani’s Brow and Eyelash Lounge

“I’ve been in the market all my life, as this is a family stall. I love it in the market, you meet people from all walks of life here and there’s a lovely family vibe between the traders, with so much banter and fun. My grandfather handed the reigns over to me 10 years ago and some people still can’t get over a woman running a hardware stall! But most customers embrace it and I’ve got a great team by my side” – Nicola, Tom Whitehouse Ltd

“Previously, I spent far too long working in a male dominated business where I felt undervalued, causing my confidence and self-worth to hit zero!
So I decided to go it alone and open Jemz in Swansea Market, selling jewellery, accessories and Italian knitwear. It’s been 6 years and I haven’t looked back! I’m surrounded by honest, happy people every day. I now look forward to coming to work and to a wonderful new experience each day. I would urge any ladies out there to listen to their hearts and make changes if unhappy in the workplace. We spend 8 hours a day at work and we all deserve to be happy. We are all worth it!” – Julie, Jemz

For International Women’s Day, we thought we’d celebrate by bringing some of our women traders together! Skilled craftswomen, chefs & bakers, beauticians, seamstresses and innovative entrepreneurs all of these ladies have made their mark on our market.
