Future Improvements to Swansea Market

In recognition of the important role that Swansea Market plays in the City Centre, the City and County of Swansea (CCS) has allocated £1m funding to undertake important repair works to the market building. At this stage the funding will be focused on essential repairs to the roof, but by using this as match funding it is anticipated that further funds can be secured to make additional improvements.

Alongside the repair works, CCS is taking the opportunity to develop a long-term vision for the Market. The Urbanists (urban design and regeneration specialists) are working with CCS to undertake consultation with Market traders and other stakeholders to develop aspirations and objectives for the future of the Market that everyone can work towards. A range of improvement projects will be identified as part of the visioning process and further funding will be sought to implement the highest priority projects.

Up-to-date news and important information for traders will be posted on this page as the improvement programme progesses.

The public will also be kept up to date via the Swansea Market website and there will also be opportunity for them to have their say on the developments via a questionnaire. Trader feedback is being received via the trader representatives following a request for nominations.

Trader representatives are: Leigh Vaughan (L Vaughan & Sons), Mark Adams (Billy Upton’s), Mark Warrington (Warringtons Cards), Chris James (Davies of Mumbles), Peter Mills (Country Quality Meats), Carol Watts (Cockle Rotunda), Jan Evans (Jan Evans Bakery), Sheron Barrington-Jones (The Sandwich Bar), Neil Morgan (Tuckers Fish), Nick Jones (Good News Swansea), Nicola Dixon (The Choice is Yours).

Dear Market Traders

3rd February 2014

ST DAVID’S DAY CELEBRATIONS & NEW RADIO CAMPAIGN

In the run up to St David’s Day, we will be promoting the Market and our St David’s Day event with a new radio campaign on Nation and Nation Hits. This campaign will target 100,000 listeners and gives us an opportunity to communicate our message to a new audience in the Swansea, Port Talbot and Llanelli area.

The ‘Proud to be Welsh’ campaign will launch on Friday 21st February – but firstly we need your help!

As well as using traditional radio ads, we’d like Swansea Market traders to feature and tell listeners why Swansea Market is so great and why they are proud to be Welsh. These radio clips would feature throughout the campaign and will bring the Market and its atmosphere to life.

Nation Hits will be in the Market on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th to record these clips and I ask that as many people as possible get involved so that we can really show the diversity and energy that can be found in the Market.

If you would like to be involved, please contact me on 01792 476370 or sarah.lawton@swansea.gov.uk by Tuesday 11th February.

There will also be Facebook and Twitter activity supporting the ‘Proud to be Welsh’ campaign and on St David’s Day itself, there will be free family entertainment and activities in the Market. We will also have a photographer offering to take free photographs of children in their Welsh costumes.

Dear Market Trader

RE: EVENTS & PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Over the next few months, there are some great events that City Centre Management is organising, to help drive additional footfall into Swansea Market.

The events are focused on attracting families and young people into the Market and there are opportunities for individual businesses to get involved.

We are also taking advantage of other independent City Centre events, such as the Welsh Menu Food Festival to capitalise upon additional visitors into the area.

Summer in the City
Over the school summer holiday, Swansea Market and the City Centre will host free children’s activities between 10.30am and 2.30pm on the following days:

  • Wednesday 6th August – National Play Day
  • Wednesday 14th August – Football Fun Day
  • Wednesday 21st August – Farm in the City
  • Wednesday 28th August – Robots Live

It will be supported by The Wave, will be advertised weekly in the Evening Post, promotional flyers will be distributed and there will also be online advertising.

Welsh Menu Food Festival
Friday 16th and Saturday 17th August (10am to 5pm)

Figleaf Media is organising The Welsh Menu Food Festival, which will take place on Princess Way and in Castle Square.

One of the empty retail units on Princess Way will be transformed into a Food Theatre where prominent chefs will be doing demonstrations throughout the day.

There are a few ways in which traders are able to get involved with festival goers:

  • There will be a Swansea Market taster stand that traders can utilise free of charge. If you have samples that you would like to distribute during the day, please let me know. I will schedule the different tasters and have promotional staff available to give them out. Additionally, if you have any flyers or special offers to go with the tasters, they can be distributed at the same time.
  • There will be an area in the demonstration unit which Swansea Market can use for advertising and display purposes. If you have food products that you would like to display, please let me know.
  • There is also the opportunity for traders to get involved with the demonstrations themselves. There will be an area devoted to giving short demonstrations on skills such as how to fillet a fish or prepare certain cuts of meat. If you are interested in taking part in this and promoting your business at the same time, please let me know.
  • I will be producing a flyer of Swansea Market special offers which will be distributed during the Friday and Saturday. If you have an offer that you would like to include, please let me know. The festival is obviously food based, but I am happy to also include non-food offers and promote the variety that is available in the Market.

In addition, inside the Market, we will be holding ‘Junior Foodie’ sessions where children can take part in cookery activities.

Please could you let me know immediately if you would like to take part in any of these activities which are all free of charge.

Craft Fair – Oh You Crafty Thing!
Saturday 24th August (10am to 4pm)

Oh You Crafty Thing! is made up of a group of talented, young, local designers offering a wide variety of quirky, unique and fashionable crafts.

Through online media and various social groups, we’ll be targeting young people in particular to visit the craft fair and discover more about Swansea Market.

Student Campaign
September

This year, Swansea Market will be present again at the Freshers’ Fairs at the local universities.

We will be producing flyers and posters for advertising on campus and in student accommodation. There will also be other activities surrounding Freshers’ Week and further details will follow.

At this, stage I’m looking to gather details of the offers that you would like to promote to students. Please could you let me know by Monday 12th August if you would like to advertise a student offer.

If you would like to chat about these events in more detail, please contact me.

RE: ‘LOYALTY CARD’ RE-LAUNCH & CITY CENTRE BRAND CAMPAIGN

This month, City Centre Management and BID are launching a new brand identity for the City Centre – The Big Heart of Swansea.

Significant investment has been made in a multimedia print and radio campaign which will run initially from July to December, with the key aim of increasing footfall to the City Centre and in particular to drive visitors into the area from West Wales.

Part of this new initiative will be to re-brand and re-launch the highly successful City Centre Loyalty Card, which was introduced last year when over 100,000 cards were distributed.

Here are some of the ways in which we are building upon the success of the City Centre Loyalty Card with the re-launch:

  • New regional focus (now includes Carmarthen & Llanelli residents)
  • Bigger multi-media marketing campaign and more promotion, valued at in excess of £100,000
  • New exciting brand – ‘The Big Heart of Swansea’
  • Bigger offers
  • Involvement of National retailers e.g. BHS
  • Transport offers being developed as part of Loyalty Card benefits
  • Social media focus including using the Big Local App to access offers and target a younger audience

It is completely FREE for you to take part in the Loyalty Card initiative and there will be lots of regional media coverage such as daily classified directory listings of offers, business led advertorials, online promotions, social media and radio.

On Wednesday 24th July, the Evening Post, Llanelli Star and Carmarthen Journal will include a Loyalty Card which readers can use immediately. For data capture and marketing purposes, they will be encouraged to register their card using a competition as an incentive, and we will use their details to keep them updated with offers and events.

Lots of businesses are already on board.  Good ideas include ‘buy one get one free’ offers, free glass of wine with every meal, % discount off bill, free item with purchases over £x etc.

If you’d like to be part of this initiative, all you need to do is supply an offer which you’d like to include on the Loyalty Card scheme!

If you have any questions or to take part in the scheme, please contact Lesley Jones at South West Wales Media  – 01792 514333 / lesley.jones@swwmedia.co.uk

RE: PROPOSED STALL CHANGES – STALL 59 (AKBAR’S BAZAAR)

There has been a proposal to extend the line offered at Akbar’s Bazaar to include rugs, throws and decorative hangings.

I would wish to seek the views of the traders within the Market in regards to these proposals. Members of the Swansea Market Traders Federation are asked to contact Mr. Leigh Vaughan (Stall 46B – L. Vaughan & Sons) who as Chairman will make the appropriate representations. Non members or those with a specific interest should provide a FORMAL WRITTEN RESPONSE to the address below no later than 5.00PM on THURSDAY 20TH JUNE 2013.

Legitimate and reasonable concerns will only be taken into consideration as part of the decision making process.

Dear Market Traders

RE: PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITY WITH THE ‘EVENING POST’

I have been approached by the ‘Evening Post’ regarding a Swansea Market promotion which they would like to run.

There would be no cost to traders to take part, other than the discount that would need to be given to ‘Evening Post’ readers taking up the promotion.

How the promotion would work:

  • ‘Evening Post’ readers would need to collect 2 coupons to affix to a Swansea Market voucher.
  • There would be 1 coupon available in each daily edition of the ‘Evening Post’ (over the course of a week).
  • If a reader collects 2 coupons, they would be eligible to receive a discount from the stallholder taking part.
  • Readers would need to present the voucher to the stallholder to redeem the discount. There would be only one discount/transaction per voucher.

Duration of promotion:

  • The discount would need to be offered for 8 days (from the Monday when the first coupon is issued).

Advertising:

  • There would be a Swansea Market advert in the ‘Evening Post’ each day that the promotion runs, with details of the stalls taking part.

The discount:

  • The ‘Evening Post’ has requested a 25% discount and whilst this would certainly be attractive to readers and generate footfall, we also have to be mindful about margins.
  • I’ve suggested a maximum 20% discount but with a minimum spend.
  • All traders taking part would need to offer the same, standard discount.

Please contact the City Centre Management office on 01792 476370, if you are interested and we can work on the discount details.

I appreciate that this type of promotion may not be suitable for all businesses but it is an opportunity that is available to you and I am more than happy to co-ordinate if you wish to take it up.
