Make your Market matter at birthday event

IT'S celebrating its 50th birthday this year after it was rebuilt following the infamous Swansea Blitz and now a major event is being held at Swansea Indoor Market later this week to help raise its profile.

The Making Markets Matter road-show is coming to the city on Thursday August 18 between 10am and 4pm to help persuade the shopping public to savour the joys of the attraction.

The event is being held in collaboration with the National Market Traders Federation and will feature cookery demonstrations, free face-painting and a find a fruit treasure hunt.

It's one of many similar events being held across the UK this summer to help put the country's 1,400 markets on the map and show people why they matter.

The Making Markets Matter mascot Victor the Lion will be on hand to entertain children throughout the day and many of the 100 plus traders will be running special offers.

Presenters from the Wave will undertake a live radio broadcast between 10am and 2pm and other fun activities will include a voucher Vault and a Play Your Cards Right stall.

Swansea Council is helping organise the fun.

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: "Swansea Indoor Market is the largest of its kind in Wales and is famous across the world for its lava bread and cockles.

"We're very proud to have maintained a vibrant market trading scene in the heart of the City Centre because it adds vibrancy and helps Swansea stand out from the crowd.

"These are tough economic times but we're looking to do all we can to attract as many quality events as possible into the City Centre to boost footfall and give a helping hand to market stallholders and other traders in the area.

"This event will have something for all the family and I'd encourage people to make a visit and discover everything the Market and the City Centre have to offer."

Joe Harrison, Chief Executive of the National Market Traders Federation, said: "Making Markets Matter is all about encouraging people to appreciate their local market and all it can offer. The Federation's road show is designed for the public to have a fun day whilst experiencing a great retail offer."

Have a look at www.swanseaindoormarket.co.uk for more information on call 01792 476370.

There will be photo opportunities available throughout the day. Contact the Communications Team on 01792 636226 for further information.

Football fever for City Centre as big kick-off looms

FOOTBALL fever will grip Swansea City Centre later this week thanks to an event marking the build-up to the new Premier League season.

Swansea City heroes and club mascot Cyril the Swan will be on hand along Oxford Street between Top Shop and McDonald's on Thursday August 11 to sign autographs and pose for photos with fans.

The event marks four days until the Swans make their Premier League bow against Manchester City and will also feature a football speed radar game, a rodeo football and street football skill demonstrations.
Play Football Swansea will also be on hand with penalty shooting competitions and Sky TV will be there to promote their coverage of the Premier League.

A children's ride will be available for little ones and water based zorbing has been arranged for the more adventurous.

The event will last from 11am to 5pm but Swans players will be there from approximately 2.30pm.
Swansea Council in conjunction with Swansea City Football Club and Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) are behind the fun.

Footage from the Swans victory parade earlier this summer will be shown on the Big Screen and the Wave will be supporting the event with an outdoor broadcast from 1pm to 5pm.
Also, thanks to Swansea Indoor Market there will be an opportunity on the day to win a Swans away shirt and ball signed by all the players.

Black and white Swans-themed bunting will also be put up in the area.

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: "Excitement is reaching fever pitch in Swansea at the moment as the city counts down the days and hours until the match against Manchester City.
"This event will help celebrate everything the Swans have achieved and will benefit city centre traders because of the footfall it will attract."

Russell Greenslade, Swansea BID Chief Executive, said: "‘This event is great for the city centre and its businesses who are keen to support the Swans at these exciting times as they enter into the Premiership.
"We'd urge people to take advantage of the free one-hour car parking in all City Centre NCP's and the £1 for four hours deal in High Street car park on the day."

It’s half a century for Swansea Market

SWANSEA'S famous indoor market will be turning back time this week to help celebrate a major milestone.

Traders and promotional staff will be donning 1960s gear on Wednesday May 18 to mark 50 years to the day since the market was officially opened.

Swansea Market was devastated by the Luftwaffe bombs that rained down on the city during World War Two but it eventually re-opened to the public in its current form in 1961.

Activities to boost the atmosphere on Wednesday include a Wave and Swansea Sound live outdoor broadcast at the market between 10am and 2pm and performances from children’s entertainer Uncle Sam.

Birthday banners will also be put up at the market entrances as well as celebratory bunting inside.

A Facebook page is being launched on the day for the market and promotional staff will be on hand to distribute 1,000 commemorative scrolls that will be packed with information about the market, historic photos of the attraction and opportunities for discounts at its stalls.

A mixture of local celebrities, birthday nibbles and 1960s music has also been arranged to add to the atmosphere on the day.

Cllr Gareth Sullivan, Swansea Council's Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: "The city is fortunate to have such a vibrant indoor market and it's hard to believe 50 years has now passed since its re-opening.

"The official launch in 1961 was indicative of Swansea's ability to rise to the challenge in the aftermath of adversity and the 50th birthday this week is testament to the hard work of traders and staff and the deep affection the public has for the market."

Swansea Market is the largest indoor market of its kind in Wales that's made up of over 100 traders. Stalls to have been at the market since the re-opening in 1961 include Leigh Vaughan and Sons, Tuckers Fresh Fish and the Swistons on the Cockle Rotunda.

Figures show over 100,000 visitors now typically come to the market every week.

Lisa Wells, Swansea City Centre Manager, said: "We've worked hard alongside the traders to put together the arrangements for the market's 50th birthday and everybody has really stepped up to the plate.

"We've organised offers and activities that will appeal to all tastes and ages and have even arranged for a Facebook page to be launched on the day to start attacting younger shoppers into the market to experience all it has to offer."

Further events to mark the historic anniversary are planned for later in the summer and details will be announced in time.

Have a look at www.swanseaindoormarket.co.uk for more information about Swansea Market.

Hamper of goodies for winner

One lucky winner walked away with a luxury hamper courtesy of Swansea Market.

Geraint Lewis along with hundreds of others entered the Swansea Market on-line competition which formed part of the Saint David’s Week celebrations.

City Centre Manager Lisa Wells said “We were overwhelmed by the number of entries this year and would like to thank the market traders who have donated prizes for the hamper.”

Mr Lewis was presented with the hamper by Lee Vaughan, Chair of the Market Traders Association at Swansea Market.

“The current Swansea Market Hall on Oxford Street will celebrate being 50 years old this year after it was re-built following the destruction of the original building in the Swansea Blitz” continued Lisa. “This competition was the start of a host of exciting events and activities planned to celebrate and promote the Market’s long established heritage as well as to highlight the wonderful array of goods and services on offer”.

Today the Market is home to over 100 local independent traders offering a warm welcome and unique variety of goods and value for money. Visit www.swanseaindoormarket.co.uk for full details

Website Wonder for Historic Market

SWANSEA people across the UK and the World will soon be able to order tastes of home from the city's historic market with the click of a mouse.

A website has now been launched for the famous attraction and includes information on units and products, a guide to the market's history, a floor plan diagram and details of opening times. It's gone live in the run-up to Christmas and will see features such as an interactive map, a fly-through video and links to individual trader websites added early next year.

Jon Llewellyn, Swansea Council's city centre team leader for markets, said: "We wanted to get the website up and running in time for the festive season to show people both here in Swansea and elsewhere exactly what's available in Swansea Market.

"The attraction already enjoys a fantastic reputation and makes an important contribution to Swansea's standing as a distinct shopping experience but going online will further bring the facility into the 21st Century at a time when shoppers have more access to information than ever before.

"This website is very much in its early stages and the New Year will see several other strands added that will benefit both traders and shoppers."

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: "Many projects have taken place in Swansea city centre in recent times that have given the pedestrianised area a modern feel. "Street broadcasting units have been installed, a giant screen has gone up at Castle Square and close to £4million has been spent in a partnership scheme with the Welsh Assembly Government on improving the appearance and quality of the area.

"The market website will help promote the attraction to even more people than ever before and will attract more shoppers into the city centre at a time when construction work on the landmark three-storey retail complex on Princess Way is also close to completion. "Swansea Market's traders and visitors have a lot to look forward to."

Other aspects of Swansea Market's new website focus on information for existing and prospective traders and contact details for travel groups that may be interested in arranging a visit.
